Snorkelers can enjoy the clear waters in the large tide pools created during low tide. The tide pools are terrific for beginners or those who just prefer shallow waters. Once you’re beneath the surface, you’ll find large schools of colorful fish including angelfish, porcupinefish, and needlefish. As you head deeper into the ocean, you may encounter moray eels, manta rays, hawksbill turtles (an endangered species), and whitetip sharks. During certain times of the year, you may even find yourself swimming alongside humpback whales!
We highly recommend renting an all terrain vehicle (ATV) or “quad” during your visit. It is a fun way to explore the area around Mal Pais and Santa Teresa, and they are the preferred method of transportation for locals.
