One of Bali’s best kept secrets, Manggis is a secluded, stylish seaside resort in Manggis, East Bali. Set amidst a coconut grove, the resort is nestled between the sea and the majestic Mount Agung, Bali’s most sacred mountain. Head away from the crowds to an unspoilt east coast hotel in Candidasa such as Manggis, where modern European shapes meet open, tropical design. Demonstrating creative function, elegant luxury and pure well-being, outdoors meets indoors throughout this boutique hotel.

Bali’s perfect ocean views are captured from four two-storey buildings built around a palm-fringed pool, ideally demonstrating simple forms and Balinese touches. Days at Manggis are filled with activity and regeneration, pampering at the Spa Alila, and pursuits by the sea such as discovering East Bali’s legendary dive sites. This is the life, East Bali style.

Inside

Manggis’ breathtaking location between the sea and Bali’s sacred Mount Agung inspired a seamless concept for the resort by its designers at Kerry Hill Architects, with free-flowing interaction between the buildings and surrounding nature. A traditional alang alang thatched roof covers the lobby, beautifully offset by polished ivory and coloured concrete floors. A latticed screen of diagonally laid stones is a feature at each end of the lobby.

Four two-storey buildings of cool white stone, lit up in geometric beams of warm tones after dark, house the guestrooms. Each block is a skilful execution of traditional and contemporary Balinese architecture, set at a 45° angle to the beach, allowing all rooms and suites a view of the sea and the resort’s centrally featured pool.

Staff & Dining

Inspired by a neighbouring organic salt farm, Seasalt Restaurant is set in a traditional Balinese pavilion on a lotus pond. Serving both a contemporary menu and a range of Indonesian and Balinese favourites, Seasalt is also an integral part of the Manggis Cooking School. Elegant and relaxed, the restaurant looks out on to the ocean and the resort’s beautifully landscaped grounds. Guests can also enjoy poolside or garden dining, set beneath the tranquil coconut grove. The organic garden nearby also presents a ‘surprisingly different’ dining option.

Seasalt

The sea salt used is farmed from the salt pans in Goa Lawah nearby, thus the name of the restaurant. Flavours are both local and international, some inspired and others traditional, some simple and a few slightly more complicated, some meals for one and others to share, some spicy and a couple that are not too spicy. We recommend some flavours to share, the signature meal, the Traditional Balinese Megibung, which is a unique and very traditional way of sharing food with friends and family during village festivals and ceremonies in East Bali and some parts of Lombok. This is an excellent way to sample the local cuisine and is decoratively served to you on a carved timber stand called the Dulang.

Organic Garden Experience

Head to the organic garden nearby – a 30-minute cycle ride or a 10-minute car ride – and enjoy a meal of fresh garden produce. The gardener will talk you through the vegetation in the garden and also introduce you to some of the different methods of irrigation and gardening used. Enjoy outdoor dining at Ocean Bale, the chef will design a menu based on your personal preferences to enjoy at this location, or you can order from the Seasalt menu.

The Living Room

A relaxing lounge to enjoy breezy East Bali, perfect for pre-dinner drinks, lounging, board games and reading.
