A traditional Alpine farmhouse which was originally built in 1697, and reconstructed in the 1840s, Baita 1697 (baita is the Italian word for a mountain dwelling) was fully renovated and modernised in 2010, retaining many of the attractive features of the original building, including the stunning stone vaulted ceiling in the sitting room, while providing a modern and luxurious standard of living. Located in the heart of a hamlet, the terrace and roof terrace offer stunning views of the mountains lining the Val Troncea. A choice of downhill skiing, as well as world-class cross-country skiing and other winter pursuits, are within 200 yards of the house.
Set over 3 floors, enjoying a open-plan living and dining room under a stone vaulted ceiling. The glass table mounted on the roots of a tree from the nearby valley seats 8 comfortably, while the dining room table is a wonderfully ingenious design, expanding or contracting to seat 8 or 12 in a congenial square configuration.
The top floor is built around an open seating area with floor-to-ceiling windows, which opens out onto the roof terrace complete with hot tub, and the beautiful views up the valley. The sitting room and games room have open log fires, while the open area at the top of the house has a glass-fronted wooden stove.
A warm and cosy ski room with separate external access provides a comfortable start to the day, and a welcome place to shed wet clothes and boots upon return. All rooms have access to an extensive music database, while the sitting room and games room have TVs and surround sound, with access to a centralised library of hundreds of films and TV series, as well as satellite TV.
The decor is a very elegant take on rustic. With items such as a leather stitched felt patchwork carpet. The owner and interior designer has strived to keep elegance and warmth throughout, whilst maintaining the use of natural products indigenous to mountain climates.
5 en suite double bedrooms spread over the upper two floors. Two of the large bedrooms have glass-fronted gas fires. The games room can serve as a 6th double bedroom and a delightful dorm for kids under the eaves, which sleeps a further six. Each of the bedrooms has a TV with access to both the music and film database and in addition an ipod docking station.
The TV and music system available throughout the house has a tendency to make people anti-social, but it is amazing how conducive to good conversation a glass of bubbles in the hot tub perched on the roof terrace can be. There is a selection of board games, and any number of places to retire to for a quiet game of backgammon or a more raucous game of Jenga.
There is a fireplace on the roof terrace, and a brazier on the garden terrace.
