Hotel Esencia is a majestic 50-acre estate at the midpoint between Tulum and Playa del Carmen in Mexico. It has long enjoyed a storied past in this ancestral cradle of culture, cuisine, and comfort. Originally built as the private hideaway home of an Italian duchess on the most beautiful beach of the Mayan Riviera, it later became a hotel, and, for some time, has been a sought after destination for honeymooners seduced by the serene comforts of this timeless mansion.
The strong architectural features of the hotel are reinforced by an entire collection of furniture designed especially for the hotel, as well as hand-woven rugs, bed throws and table tops. All are subtly paying homage to mid century design and art in Mexico and more generally places of leisure from California to the French Riviera to Acapulco.
Simple and sophisticated, the whitewashed walls throughout echo the dazzling white beach beyond. The Main House is surrounded by a tranquil garden full of lush vegetation and lawns, with footpaths leading to the various elegant rooms and suites.
A recent refurbishment saw the addition of a spectacular art and antiques collection including chairs by Jeanneret, lamps by Mouille and Guariche, Picasso ceramics and art by leading Latin American modern artists.
Every room at Hotel Esencia by any other standard would be called a suite. The private terrace and sitting area built into the contours of each room offer a peaceful view on the arbor canopy or an impressive panorama of the Caribbean.
A private duplex residence featuring a large living room, 2 bedrooms, 1 king bed, 2 queen beds, a master bathroom suite with separate walk-in shower and tub, 2 additional bathrooms, a large private heated swimming pool, multiple terraces with seating and hammocks, complete separate media room with 52 inch HDTV/DVDs, iPod sound system, complimentary mini-bar, walk-in closets, and Hotel Esencia signature amenities. Sleeps 4 adults, however extra beds are available (maximum 5 adults/3 children).
Hotel Esencia is located fifty minutes south of Cancún and thirty minutes north of Tulum by car. The property is surrounded on the north by the Mayan jungle and on the south by Xpu-Ha beach, often referred as the most beautiful stretch of the Mayan Riviera.
Dining at Hotel Esencia is at once a culinary voyage and a coming home. Meals are simple yet sophisticated, drawing as much from Mexico’s eclectic range of regional cuisines as from the well-loved comforts of Mediterranean cooking. What is not taken from Hotel Esencia’s own garden is sourced locally from farmers and artisans in Quintana Roo, or further afield from the places in Mexico known for exemplary delicacies—moles from Oaxaca, fruits from Yucatán, and wines from Baja.
Situated between the pools and the beach, The Pool Restaurant is a picturesque spot to start one’s day. With an emphasis on seasonal ingredients and apt updates to coastal staples from Latin America and around the world, the menu is an ode to the south.
Located in the heart of the palm garden, The Garden Restaurant offers a refined take on Mexican cuisine from the Yucatán and beyond. While the décor 8 and service might remind guests of an old world resort, the creative menus offer fresh approaches to tradition.
Situated squarely between Tulum and Playa del Carmen, Mayan Pyramids, underground cenotes and some of the Riviera’s best nightclubs, all are only 20 minutes away. For an adventure only steps off the hotel’s beach, there is a reef sanctuary for sea turtles and colorful exotic fish – one of the region’s best kept secrets. A concierge is available 24/7 to arrange a multitude of activities from scuba diving, horseback riding, deep-sea fishing, and golf as well as excursions to Mayan ruins and guided tours of underground rivers locally referred to as cenotes.
At the east end of the gardens is Hotel Esencia’s new health club overlooking the estate’s cenote. Housed under traditional palapa roofs, the fitness room, juice bar and spa integrate hallmarks of modern wellbeing with ancient customs of cultivating beauty, balance, and peace.
The spa begins with a state-of-the art laboratory where therapists tailor bespoke, restorative programs. Taking advantage of the hotel’s Edenic location, the purest ingredients harvested from the waters of the Caribbean and the soil of surrounding Mayan jungles are the basis of every treatment. Guests leave Hotel Esencia cleansed and whole.
The climate controlled fitness room features Technogym cardio machines, Pilates reformers, weights, and personal instruction in various body arts, all under a soaring thatched ceiling.
The Juice Bar crafts cold-pressed, made-to-order blends of locally grown fruits and vegetables—ideal refreshment to greet the day, recover from a workout, or to sip between spa treatments.
