The various gardens outside are absolutely beautiful and breathe an air of serenity and peace. The lower garden is the ideal place to have an evening cocktail or to simply relax under the gigantic araucaria tree. From this garden, you can access the “patio” where meals can be served. From there, you can go up to the so-called “upper garden”, which has a heated outdoor swimming pool, and various relaxation areas.
There are various living rooms in the house, each with their own identity. The Sala Grande (large living room), which is decorated with several portraits, including an 19th century masterpiece by Portuguese painter Auguste Roquement; the drawing room, the dining room with a rare painted wallpaper showing hunting scenes; the cosy plates room with fireplace, and the reading room, the ideal place to read, work or simply relax.
The price is inclusive of breakfast (buffet-style), daily cleaning , changing of linen twice a week , pool service. Permanent staff on site. Personal laundry, private chef, baby sitters, drivers, masseuse, yoga… available on request at an additional cost. Daily custom made meals and picnics also available on request at an additional cost.
7 beautiful and unique double bedrooms, most with panoramic views over Santiago or the Arrábida mountains. The Garden Suite is built in one of the old outhouses, with a bathroom built in what was previously the dovecote. It also has a small kitchenette, with vintage bread oven, and AC.
There are 6 bathrooms, 5 of which are ensuite. All bathrooms have central heating, bathrobes, and luxury toiletries.
Annabel loves the charm and sense of history maintained at Santiago House. A rare opportunity to step back into the past with all the comforts of the present.
The house can organise a variety of activities to make your stay as relaxing or adventurous as possible. Or both! Sporting activities include surfing lessons and visits to the best surf spots, bird watching at St Andrew's lake or Vicentine Coast Natural Park, trekking throught the 'rota Vincentina' ...For the less sporty, the house can organise Fado or opera sessions at home, traditional cookery courses based on old family recipes with a special focus on confectionary, jams and liqueurs, where most of the ingredients are from the house’s own organic garden, and with visits to local craftsmen and women...
Melides is a 15 minute drive away from the house. Melides Beach is a long, unspoiled stretch of white sand that separates the sea and the lagoon. The 4 kilometre scenic road that leads to the beach, past pine trees and rice fields, leads to the village, a traditional Alentejo village with its white houses and calm streets. Well worth a visit!
Comporta is a 35 minute drive from the house and well-worth a visit. It is a wild, totally preserved paradise of dunes, deserted beaches of golden sand, pristine blue sea and beautiful endless pine forests for guests to discover. One can try horse riding on the beach, learn to surf in Carvahal beach, cycle, enjoy the rice fields on canoe, watch the dolphins in the ocean, but most of all just relax and enjoy the beautiful light and scenery. For dinner, we recommend Dona Bia, known for its fabulous seafood, Museo do Arroz, great for after dinner drinks and music, and the recently opened Cavalarica which has inventive food based on local products.
