Situated in Shela village, Housemartin has perfectly blended Swahili architecture and Islamic flourishes with modern comforts. The 5 bedroom property, finished in 2012, was overseen by well respected, Kenya based interior designers Chris Payne and Emma Campbell. It has recently featured in World Of Interiors (please click logo below). Lamu (see Condé Nast Article below) epitomises the rich heritage of Arab, Portuguese and Swahili influences and is a world UNESCO heritage site.
Housemartin follows tradition and has a large open plan rooftop terrace to catch the warming air from the Indian Ocean. Housemartin is unique due to it’s garden space that is very uncommon for most properties in Lamu. Covered by trees, the pool area and garden space is enchanted and the perfect place to relax.
The Owner’s, with the help of well respected interior designers, have managed to create a property that keeps to the wonderful traditions of Swahili culture and the Arabic influence found in Lamu. The property boasts a large and airy hallway lined with exceptional artwork, from the likes of Onyis Martin and Ephrem Solomon, and handwoven palm rugs from Zanzibar. With thick white walls, Housemartin keeps the heat at bay in all of the indoor rooms with ceiling fans.
The Owners plan from the beginning was always to have a large, modern kitchen, which isn’t the norm in Kenya. Housemartin is a wonderful place to host friends and can seat up to 12 guests either on the ground floor or up on the roof terrace. Staff included in the property are 2 room stewards, 1 waiter, 1 chef, 1 nightwatchman and a maintenance man.
The property has 5 ensuite bedrooms, 3 of which are on the first floor, 2 on the second floor. All the bedrooms have ceiling fans.
All of the bedrooms are ensuite, all of which have large overhead showers.

A small boutique hotel that really is the heart of Lamu. Virtually all visitors to Lamu end up on Peponi's bougainvillea-shaded terrace at some point!
