The Mani has a coastline of hidden coves and beaches, some rocky, some pebbly, some with sand. The long beach at Santova, along from Kitries, is ten minutes by car or an hour on foot. It has beach bars and full-moon parties in the summer months- ideal for those needing a break from the tranquility or parents. Alternatively, the beach at Kardamili, with its dramatic backdrop of mountains, is great for swimming, reading and siesta after a long lunch at one of the many tavernas that look onto the beach.
There are excellent tavernas in the charming local villages, whether by the sea or up in the hills. All of them serve good Greek food. Kitries is the local fishing village and has two on the seafront. Kardamili has several, as do Stoupa and Agios Nikolaos further down the coast. For Greek dancing, the enchanting village of Pigi is a drive to the south.
Kardamili is the local village and one of the most charming in the Peloponnese. A very long time ago, it was a city offered to Achilles by Agamemnon to tempt him from his tent. Now, it's a village with a long beach, fabulous tavernas and an international jazz festival every May.
